Unmanned Systems (BS)

The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in unmanned systems.

This degree program prepares students for entry and advancement within the aerial, land, and water vehicles/robotics workforce of the future. The program is one of the first of its kind in Indiana and one of only a few in the United States. Indiana State University is ranked one of the Top Five Best Drone Training Colleges in the United States by Drone Training HQ.

• Coursework includes an unmanned systems core, an aviation core, and the University's Foundational Studies Program, which provides the knowledge students need in critical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal and communication skills.
• Students are encouraged to purse a minor field of study, especially in areas where unmanned systems will play an important role. Suggested minors include: aviation technology, criminology and criminal justice, geographic information science, computer engineering technology, computer science, communication, and business administration. Students also may choose to obtain a double major.
• Flight training is not required. However, students planning to pursue a career as a professional unmanned aerial systems operator/pilot are encouraged to obtain at least a private pilot certificate.
• The University's Aviation Technology Department is internationally recognized for the excellence of its facilities, faculty, and graduates. Relatively small class sizes enable students to work one-on-one with highly talented and dedicated faculty members who are professional leaders in the aviation industry. Multi-million dollar facilities include fully-simulated laboratories for flight practice, computer lab for aviation technology students, and well-equipped classrooms.
• A number of activities and organizations are available that enable students to interact with other students and professionals, including Alpha Eta Rho, the American Association of Airport Executives, and Women in Aviation International. Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad opportunities—which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.

Special Note: Consideration will be given to allow college credit to students who have already obtained flight certificates or aviation flight experience. Questions should be directed to the Department of Aviation Technology.
