Pre-Medicine

The Pre-Medicine Program provides an excellent foundation for students who plan to attend medical school. This program is not designed for students intending to apply to Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner programs.

Upon admission, each student works with a pre-professional advisor, who helps the student develop a strategy for completing pre-requisites, identifying an appropriate departmental major (degree program), and navigating the application process for medical school.

During the second or third semester of study, each student selects a major field of study, and a faculty advisor is assigned to develop a plan to meet degree requirements for that major.

An important feature of the program is its emphasis on blending classroom learning with practical experience and extracurricular activities.

• Students benefit from relatively small classes taught by talented faculty dedicated to providing quality learning opportunities to their students.
• To enrich their coursework, students have opportunities to participate in research and shadowing experiences—as well as the opportunity to work alongside professors in the laboratory.
• The presence of the Indiana University School of Medicine–Terre Haute on the Indiana State University campus presents students with the unique opportunity to interact with medical school faculty and students.
• Students may engage in volunteer work and community service at organizations such as the St. Ann’s Clinic and the Area Health Education Center.

In addition, students may participate in the Premedical Student Association, the University Honors Program, and study abroad opportunities—which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.

Note: Students residing in rural Indiana may be eligible for the Rural Health Program, offered jointly by Indiana State University and the Indiana University School of Medicine.
