Construction Management (BS)

The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in Construction Management.

The Construction Management program combines education and experience in both technical and managerial skills to prepare students for leadership roles in the construction profession. Laboratory and work experience supplement classroom lectures to provide practical and useful skills.

With its comprehensive, management-oriented focus, the program helps students understand the impact of construction on the environment and on society and prepares students to be leaders in this exciting field.

The program provides instruction in the following areas:

• Building design and planning
• Environmental control systems
• Principles of quality concrete and the proper techniques used in the field
• Project management, including construction costs, budgets, bids, critical path scheduling, inspection, manpower utilization, and cost control
• Theories of forces in building structures
• Use of tapes, levels, and transits to layout structures, determine elevations, and locate boundaries

Coursework includes studies related to the following topics—plus an internship.

In addition, students complete the University's Foundational Studies program, which provides the knowledge students need in critical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal and communication skills.

Students gain real-world experience through participation in the internship program, which requires actual work experience. Students are often offered full-time employment by the partnership company upon graduation.

Courses in the major are taught by full-time professors and industry partners who have work experience in the field. The department offers small class sizes, which allow for individual attention. The program is located in the Department of Built Environment in the Technology Annex building with state-of-the-art laboratories. The Department of Built Environment includes the following programs: Architectural Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Safety Management, and Interior Architectural Design.

Extracurricular activities are encouraged. Three student organizations that offer opportunities for leadership and learning outside of the classroom are the Construction Club (student chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association - NECA), Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), and Sigma Lambda Chi (the honorary society for construction). These organizations sponsor fund-raising and charitable activities. These activities allow students to practice their management skills, contribute to their community, and to have fun. The Associated Schools of Construction sponsors student competitions with other construction programs which provides students with realistic projects and work experience.

Special Note: The Construction Management program is offered on the Terre Haute campus. The program is also offered via online learning.

Technology Requirements

All students enrolled in the online Construction Management Program must have access to a Windows computer. Mac users will need to install Windows on the Mac. Some applications in the Program only run in the Windows operating system. This is nonnegotiable.
